The First European Monotype University, Geneva, Swiss, 13-18 juni 2004
As been done before at the other side of the Atlantic, the First European
Monotype University will be held this year in Geneva. 13-18 June.
Our students will have the opportunity to acquire all skills and knowlegde
about Monotype & casting type. This course is meant for all people
passionate on Monotype, professionals and amateurs.
On 19-20 June a touristic tour in and around Geneva will be organized.
We will visit : the Foundation Bodmer, The University Library, Ecomusée
Voltaire, Espace Rousseau, Imprimerie des Arts.
Organization: Association Format typographique (Orléans), Convention
typographique (Paris); Association pour le Patrimoine Industriel, Association
Lettres et Images (Genève).
There is no registration fee or charge for signing up to the course.
All meals are provided free of charge by the University. Sleeping-places
are available for all participants in a dormitory. Hotels lodgings and
transport expenses are to be covered by the student visitors themselves,
who will need to take care of their own travel and accommodation arrangements.
The program will be set up by participant proposal, the following subjects
are already planed:
• introduction and presentation of the IMMP project.
• mould knowledge and preservation.
• Dismantling and re-assemble a Monotype-composition-caster.
• Dismatling and re-assembling the Monotype keyboard.
• casting on the casters, maintenance and trouble shooting.
• preservation machines .
• computer controlled casting and keyboarding.
and all other things you would like to know about Monotype
Do you have special wishes, do not hesitate asking. We will sure try
helping you. Workshops will be held by several old professionals in
Monotype, among them: Amédeé Bernasconi, Gerry Drayton,
en Marcel Gentile, and others will be invited. They did spent all their
working lives with these marvelous machines. They will show us that
it's still possible to cast lead type to boost typograpical creatifity
in the XXI-th century.
The university will be as polyglottic as possible. English, German,
French, Italian, Dutch etc.
To provide to all the unique opportunity to learn the trade from the
old masters.
The event will be covered life on the internet, by webcam, and all other
available channels.

La première Université Monotype européenne se tiendra

outre-Atlantique, elle s'adresse aux passionnés et aux professionnels
spécialisés dans la fonte de caractères Monotype.
Les 19 et 20 juin, les participants seront invités à découvrir
l'itinéraire culturel genevois du Livre. Principales étapes
: Fondation Bodmer, Bibliothèque Publique Universitaire (BPU),
Musée Voltaire, Espace Rousseau, Imprimerie des Arts.
Organisateurs : Association Format typographique (Orléans), Convention
typographique (Paris); Association pour le Patrimoine Industriel, Association
Lettres et Images (Genève).
Logement en dortoirs et repas offerts par les organisateurs; hôtel
et voyage à la charge des participants.
Le programme s'élabore avec les participants de l'Université
Monotype.
Quelques thèmes sont déjà proposés :
• Introduction et présentation du projet IMMP (International
Monotype Memory Project)
• Démontage et remontage du clavier Monotype.
• Démontage et remontage de la fondeuse composition.
• Fonte des caractères et traitement des problèmes
techniques.
• Le moule, son réglage et son entretien.
• Pilotage de la fondeuse par ordinateur.
• Tout ce que vous avez toujours voulu savoir sur la Monotype.
La partie atelier sera conduite par d'anciens professionnels de la Monotype.
Nous nous réjouissons de vous permettre de rencontrer, parmi
d'autres, Amédée Bernasconi, Gerry Drayton et Marcel Gentile,
qui nous parleront avec enthousiasme de cette étonnante machine
à fondre les caractères, que nous voulons voir servir
la création typographique au plomb du XXI e siècle.
Anglais, allemand, français, italien, flamand, etc., la rencontre
se veut aussi polyglotte que possible. Elle sera retransmise sur internet.

In navolging van eerdere voorbeelden aan de overzijde van de atlantische
oceaan, zal de eerste European Monotype University dit jaar worden gehouden
in Geneve. Van 13 tot 18 juni zal er gelegenheid zijn om u te bekwamen
in alles wat met Monotype te maken heeft, daarna zal er op 19 en 20
juni 'n touristische tocht worden georganiseerd in en rond Geneve. Op
het programma staan dan: Fondation Bodmer, Bibliothèque Publique
Universitaire (BPU), Musée Voltaire, Espace Rousseau, Imprimerie
des Arts.
De organisatie is in handen van het: Ecomusée Voltaire, Association
Format typographique (Orléans), Convention typographique (Paris);
Association pour le Patrimoine Industriel, Association Lettres et Images
(Genève).
Deelname is gratis voor alle belangstellenden, ook voor logies (zij
het wat spartaans in de slaapzalen van de civiele verdediging) zal worden
gezorgd. Reiskosten en hotel-overnachtingen zijn voor eigen rekening
van de deelnemers.
Het programma staat op dit moment nog niet geheel vast, maar zal onder
andere omvatten:
• presentatie van het IMMP-project.
• onderhoud, verzorging, afstelling van de gietmachines.
• demonteren en monteren van het Monotype keyboard.
• kennis van gietvormen, praktisch onderhoud daarvan.
• het maken van monotype-banden, onderhoud keyboards.
• computer gestuurd zetselgieten en banden maken.
en nog veel meer.
Op eventuele wensen en verzoeken zal zoveel mogelijk worden ingespeeld.
Diverse workshops zullen worden geleid door 'n aantal oude vaklui. Onder
hen: Amédeé Bernasconi, Gerry Drayton, en Marcel Gentile,
en nog anderen, als hun gezondheid het hen toestaat. Zij hebben hun
leven lang gewerkt met deze prachtige machines. En zullen ons tonen,
dat ook in de XXI-ste eeuw het nog steeds perfect mogelijk is loden
letter te gieten, om daarmee op creatieve wijze typografie te bedrijven.
De universiteit zal zeer veeltalig zijn, engels, duits, frans, italiaans,
nederlands... etc. Om een ieder zoveel mogelijk de gelegenheid te bieden
iets op te steken van deze oude rotten (en anderen) in het vak.
Via 'n webcam zal 'n life verslag worden gedaan op internet, en verder
op alle daarvoor beschikbare kanalen.

Si terrà a Ginevra dal 13 al 18 giugno 2004 la prima “Università
Monotype Europea”. Come l’analoga manifestazione di oltre
Oceano, è aperta agli appassionati e agli specialisti della fusione
dei caratteri Monotype.
Il 19 e 20 giugno, i partecipanti sono invitati alla scoperta di un
itinerario culturale ginevrino del libro.
Queste le principali tappe dell’itinerario:
Fondazione Bodmer, Biblioteca Pubblica Universitaria (BPU), Museo Voltaire,
Spazio Rousseau, Ecomusée Voltaire, Imprimerie des Arts.
Organizzatori: Association Format typographique (Orléans), Convention
typographique (Paris); Association pour le Patrimoine Industriel, Association
Lettres et Images (Genève).
Viaggio e alloggio a spese dei partecipanti; pranzo offerto dagli Organizzatori.
Il programma sarà elaborato anche sulla base di proposte e suggerimenti
dei partecipanti all’Università Monotype. Ecco alcuni dei
temi già proposti:
. Introduzione e presentazione del progetto IMMP (Progetto Memoria Internazionale
della Monotype).
. Smontaggio e assemblaggio della tastiera Monotype.
. Fusione dei caratteri e soluzione dei problemi tecnici.
. La forma, il suo utilizzo e la corretta manutenzione.
. Pilotare la fonditrice con il computer.
. Tutto quello che avete sempre voluto sapere della Monotype.
Il laboratorio sarà guidato da specialisti della Monotype.
Saremo lieti di introdurvi, tra gli altri, Amédée Bernasconi,
Gerry
Drayton e Marcello Gentile, che ci parleranno con entusiasmo di questa
straordinaria fonditrice di caratteri, che ci auspichiamo di vedere
al servizio della creatività tipografica in piombo pure del XXI
secolo.
Inglese, tedesco, francese, italiano, fiammingo, ecc.: il nostro incontro
incoraggia il plurilinguismo e si potrà assistere anche via internet
(webcam) e con altri mezzi di comunicazion

»1. Europäische Monotype Universität« in Genf
Nach dem Muster früherer Veranstaltungen jenseits des Atlantiks
findet im Jahr 2004 die Erste Europäische Monotype-Universität
vom 13. bis zum 18. Juni in Genf in der Schweiz statt. Die Veranstaltung
ermöglicht sowohl den Liebhabern als auch den Spezialisten Ihre
Kenntnisse und Fertigkeiten über die Monotype Gissemaschine zu
erweitern.
Eine Stadtrundfahrt in und um Genf am 19. und 20. Juni bildet den
Abschluss der Veranstaltung.

Die Gastgeber sorgen für die Verpflegung, Reise-und Unterkunftskosten
fallen hingegen zu lasten des Teilnehmer.
Das Endprogramm wird gemeinsam mit den Teilnehmern der Monotype-Universitätveranstaltung
erarbeitet.
Einzelne Themen wurden jedoch schon festgelegt.
- Einführung und Präsentation des IMMP-Projekts
- Matritzenherstellung und Konservierung.
- Schriftgiessen an der Giessmaschine, Instandhaltung und Fehlerbeseitigung
- Maschinen zur Erhaltung und Konservierung
- Computerkontrollierte Bedienung von Gießmaschinen.
und alles andere, was Sie schon immer über die Monotype wissen
wollten
und sich bisher nicht zu fragen getrauten.

Die Atelieraktivitäten werden von "Meistern" des Monotyps
gefürt. Wir freuen uns, Sie mit den Herren Amédée
Bernasconi, Gerry Drayton und Marcel Gentile bekanntzumachen, die Ihnen
Ihre Erfahrungen mit der ausserordentlichen Monotype-Giessmaschine,
mit Freude mitteilen. Wir hoffen, dass, die Maschine auch im 21 Jahrhundert
der Schöpfung der Typographie dienen wird.
Auf der Veranstaltung wird Englisch, Deutsch, Französisch,
Italienisch, Niederländisch usw. gesprochen. Wir unterstützen
